Most organisers already have the group in a spreadsheet: a class list from the school system, a squad sheet from the club, a registration export from a conference tool. You can upload that file to MUSTER instead of typing thirty names. This guide covers what the import expects and how to fix the lines it skips.
The columns
The first row of the file must name the columns. MUSTER looks for three:
The column order does not matter, and extra columns are ignored, so you can upload an export with a dozen columns without deleting any. The header names are not case-sensitive. The import also accepts full name or traveller for the name column, e-mail or email address for the email column, and role or team for the group column.
- name: the traveller's name as you want it on the install board and in their install email. Full name or first name and initial both work.
- email: the address the install link goes to. For school trips with under-16s, this is often a parent's address, which is fine. Each traveller on a trip needs a different address.
- group: optional. A short label such as Year 10, Staff, Groom's family or Camera. It shows on the board and helps you see which part of the group is behind.
Commas or semicolons
Spreadsheet programs in much of Europe save CSV files with semicolons, because the comma is the decimal separator there. MUSTER reads the header row, counts both characters, and uses whichever appears more. You do not need to change your export settings.
If a name contains the separator, for example Okafor, Tunde in a comma file, the cell must be in double quotes. Every spreadsheet program does this when it saves, so this only goes wrong in files typed by hand.
The five mistakes that skip lines
- A missing header row. If the first line is a traveller, the import cannot tell which column is which and stops. Add the header.
- A blank or one-letter name. Lines where the name has fewer than two characters are skipped.
- An address that is not an address. Typos such as a missing @ or a trailing full stop inside the cell fail the check. The import reports the line number and the value it saw.
- The same email twice. The second line is skipped. This catches families who gave one parent's address for two children: give the second child a different address, or install both eSIMs on the phones in person.
- A merged title row above the header, such as Trip to Seville 2026. Delete it, so the header is the first line with content.
Limits
One file can hold up to 500 travellers and 200 KB. A 500-line file with three columns is about 25 KB, so the size limit only bites when an export carries a lot of extra columns. If yours does, delete the columns you do not need and save again.
Travellers already on the trip with the same email are not duplicated. You can upload a corrected file after fixing the skipped lines, and only the new travellers are added.
After the import
Read the skipped lines list before you generate. Fix the file, upload again, and check that the roster count matches your group list. The generate screen then prices exactly the travellers on the roster who have no eSIM yet, and shows you the total before you confirm.
